Wearing orange on Sept. 30 for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day is more than a symbol, it’s a powerful act of remembrance and solidarity.
Created in partnership with the Kingston Native Centre and Language Nest (KNCLN), the artwork featured is an original design by Catherine Bourbonnais, of Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) descent with roots traced to Kahnawà:ke, honours the past, present and future of children affected by the residential school system.
The design features:
· Three children/person silhouettes: Representing past, present and future children affected by residential schools.
· Two feathers: Symbolizing spiritual protection and balance, honouring the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabeg nations, whose teachings and presence are central to this design.
· Seven rays of the sun: Representing the Seven Grandfather Teachings, symbolizing the guiding values the teachings include.
$5 from every shirt sold will be donated to KNCLN, the local friendship centre, providing culturally appropriate services for Indigenous people in the region.
